This would be rather heavy to carry but handy to have when having to dig a foxhole in hard ground. Don't think many carried these as weight was so important many carried only the spoon in their mess kits. Most carried the light weight shovel. Could be for engineer units.
This one is dated 1942. Looks like it has A.F.H. also but I am not finding a match for that
