Ruth Gowdy McKinley (1931-1981) was born in Brooklyn, New York. She studied at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, where she received both her B.F.A. and M.F.A, as a student of Charles Harder, Daniel Rhodes and Marion Fosdick. She had ties to the Ossipee Pottery of New Hampshire, where she was a partner from 1955 to 1957. She moved to Canada in 1967. She was known especially for her functional ceramics. Ruth exhibited at the Syracuse Ceramic Nationals in 1954, 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964. Ruth was the first potter elected into the Royal Canadian Academy of Art. Her work is included in the collections of the Musee Natiuonal des Beaux-Arts du Quebec. Additionally, her works are in the permanent collections of the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, Waterloo, Ontario, The Burlington Art Centre, Burlington, Ontario, The Gardiner Museum, Toronto, Ontario, and the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Gatineau, Quebec.
