I posted this, my favorite portrait, years ago, whenever I first joined "Collector's Weekly." There is a lot of history connected to this portrait. It once belonged to actor, Peter Turgeon, who was one of the actors who played Dr. Woodard on the original "Dark Shadows" television series in the 1960s. My previously posting includes a photo of "Nell" in real life, as well as a picture of vampire Barnabas Collins and Dr. Woodard.
I am posting this again, because I recently discovered more information regarding the fabulous artist, as well as a few photos of him. I wanted to give him the credit he deserves.
John William Northcross (1922-2005) obituary:
JOHN WILLIAM NORTHCROSS, 82, of Memphis and New York City, portrait artist, died Thursday at his home. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Elmwood. Canale Funeral Directors has charge. He was a World War Il Navy veteran, a graduate of Webb School and attended Davidson College.
The portrait was on display at Middlebury College, Vermont at the "Friends of Art" exhibition in the 1970s/1980s
The following is from my first posting:
This is a portrait of Cornelia "Nell" Flint Cousins Egan who was the second wife of a famous war correspondent. This was painted in 1971 by John Northcross who was an advertising artist. After I purchased this, I discovered that it once belonged to an actor who played a doctor in the original Dark Shadows television series. He was the doctor who was murdered by Barnabas Collins, the vampire in one of the episodes. I love this painting. I contacted the actor's daughter who sent me the actual photo of Mrs. Egan who lived in the Hamptons in New York.

Mrs. Egan was especially interested in the Animal Medical Center of New York, the New York Association for the Blind, the Salvation Army, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the New York Hospital for Rehabilitation.
She was a member of the Junior League of Brooklyn, and belonged to yacht clubs in East Hampton, LI and Nassau, the Bahamas, where she maintained homes.

Nell willed her home in the Hamptons, NY to Mr. Turgeon and he inherited the painting. I spoke to Mr. Turgeon's daughter on the phone and discovered that she had sold the painting after her father's death. She called the painting the "Green Lady" also!!! She told me how exciting it was to have her father acting on Dark Shadows and how she used to hurry home to see the show after school. The painting looks like it could have hung on the wall in the Collins mansion. I love to watch my Dark Shadows DVDs with the "Green Lady" staring down at me. It makes it even more creepy!
