The amazing P-39 Airacobra Brooches from King George VI of The United Kingdom and Great Britain,, continue to reveal very unique and amazing aspects and discoveries. -- Subject: The Red and Blue natural stones used in the "Star In Circle" emblems on the 2 front wings -and - the Red and Blue natural stones used in the Vertical Tail Section . ----------- This posting is to explore some extremely unique aspects concerning the first P-39 Airacobra Brooch, presented to Lawrence Dale "Larry" Bell by King George VI, in June, 1942. ----- OBSERVATIONS AND ITEMS TO BE CONSIDERED: 1) The P-39 Airacobra diamond and platinum brooch may be one of the most complex and complicated high-end brooches ever made. -- 2) All Red and Blue natural stones are "Bezel" or "Stone to Stone/Bezel " mounted - this is the most secure method of mounting precious stones. -- NOTE: Over 222 round brilliant cut diamonds used are "Prong" mounted - less secure vs the Bezel mounting method. The horizontal tail section wings and flaps contain only white brilliant cut round diamonds representing one diamond for each of the American 48 states, in 1942. Each rear flap contain 13 diamonds representing the original 13 British Colonies. All 48 diamonds are "Prong" mounted. --- 3) The center round Red stone, in both of the "Star in Circle" emblems are raised, higher than the surrounding white and blue ""stones. -- 4) On the vertical tail section each of the white, red and blue stones have identical - reversed mirror image stones on both right and left sides. -- 5) On the vertical tail section the white diamonds are "one" piece diamonds filling the intended mounting space, mounted back to back, ( right side and left side ) -- This is not the case for the Red and Blue stones, - one, two, or three stones fill the intended mounting space, all "bezel" or "stone to stone bezel" mounted. -- 6) The question must be asked, if Garrard used one white diamond to make all white stripes, why in the case of Red and Blue stripes, did they use two and three stones to make a Red and/or Blue stripes ??? ----- This is more time consuming and costly to accomplish the intended purpose. ------------ According to "The Cape Town Diamond Museum" in Cape Town, South Africa, most Red and Blue diamonds are light red or light blue in color. Dark red and dark blue diamonds are very rare and are usually in the .02 to .20 ct. weight range. ---------------- The Red and Blue stones in the P-39 Airacobra Brooch are "Dark Red" and "Dard Blue" in color and they fall within the .02 to .20 ct. weight range. ------------- Note: There are approx. 34 dark red stones and 26 dark blue stones, totaling 60 red and blue stones present in the P-39 Airacobra Brooch. ---- ( white diamonds not included )------ Note: During this time period, Cape Town, South Africa was under British Royal Rule. ------- Note: Cape Town, South Africa, was released from British Royal Rule, May 31, 1961. ----------- The intent of this posting is for verifiable historical and educational information. --------- For questions or comments of a verifiable historical or educational nature ---- Wayne Hugh Long ---- whlong2715@gmail.com ---- For more historical information, see the book ------ Secrets of the P-39 Airacobra Brooches of Lawrence Dale "Larry" Bell of the Bell Aircraft Company.
