Carved Bodhisatva - bamboo? some kind of swirly-grained wood?

I have had this for years and I always thought it was plastic or carved bakelite or something like that. I just inspected it with a lighted magnifying glass and I realized there is a very swirly grain there and it is very finely carved. It is a carved wood tube and there is a yellow plastic disk set into the base with a da ming... mark and 'CHINA' in red. I'd love to get some more info on this piece. I can't believe i thought it was plastic all these years!
