This is a original WWII US Army wool overcoat. These were worn in cold weather conditions. I don't know how common they were. Don't see too many pictures of troops wearing these.

This one was produced in May of 1945.

I do have some Original patches I'm considering sewing on. You can see this originally had a ruptured duck sewn on.

They were part of the standard issue given to every Army soldier in basic training.

Just like today, the problems arise based on the fact that soldiers cannot carry everything issued with them at all times.

True, Seems like most of the photo's I have seen of like battle of the bulge . Most troops were poorly clothed. Freezing to death.

Seems like some soldiers put patches and insignia and some did not?

Many soldiers went into the Bulge without sufficient ammunition as well-- similar stories can be told throughout US military history. I have personal wartime experiences that are similar.

However, I wouldn't draw the far reaching conclusion of "Our troops were not issued proper clothing during the winter months" based on the Battle of the Bulge.

Overall our troops were well equipped and well armed.

I traded mine to a neighbor for a civilian wool long coat. It fit better and was warmer.
