I have just found a beautiful Frankoma vase, globe shaped, green with floral-pattern silver overlay, about 5" tall, in perfect condition. I have searched in vain to find a value and need to know what it's worth. I think the silver work was probably done by the American Silver Works, c.1940's. I'd appreciate as much info as I can get in addition to the value. Thank you. jh
I havent seen but a few pieces of this silver overlay frankoma...and it has all been in the prairie green like yours. It has been some time since I have seen it, but it was at an antique show and sale here in MO. There were 4-5 pieces of it and it all had very high prices on it....like I say it was about 9 yrs ago and dont recall the exact prices. But have looked for an affordable piece ever since for my moms collection. You might try the frankoma family website and call one of the numbers listed there. I did that once about a piece I had a question about and wound up talking to the nicest lady for a long time about frankoma...only to find out mid conversation that I was talking to Donna Frank... one of the Frank daughters.
If the base of this round vase is black, then it is #55, "Black Footed Vase." According to the 2000 book by Phyllis and Tom Bess, it is listed (without the silver overlay) as between $40-$50. With the silver overlay, a similar vase is listed at a value of $300-$350. The Frankoma book by Gary Schaum (1997) lists it at $$200-$250. But these are old prices. And since the Frankoma Pottery manufacturing facility located in Sapulpa, Oklahoma just had a public auction in May, 2011, to sell off all of their inventory (except the molds and rights to the Frankoma name, which will be sold soon in a private auction) ALL prices will most likely rise significantly. I have been watching prices rise on eBay since this has occurred. The Schaum book states, "During the 1940's Frankoma supplies various vases and bowls to American Silver Works of New York. These pieces were purchased from Frankoma and resold through their New York company after applying the silver design." The Bess book adds, "All we've seen are decorated over Frankoma's Prairie Green glaze." You are very fortunate to have one of these remarkable pieces, and if you ever want to sell it, please let me know :-)
Hi Todd, If you are a true Frankoma collector that would like a piece with the silver overlay, I have a serving bowl with the same silver overlay pattern as the one above. It is in excellent condition.
the Frankoma plant is/was less than 15 miles from where i live. they used to have a retail sowroom at the front of the store. I can reember my mom taking me along with her, Frankhoma dinnersets/cups must have been pretty cheap as we were penny-pinchers & she used these daily. This was in the 1960s- early 70s. U can spot Frankoma in the dark! Was one of the prides of Okla. , still is.
