I was given this tie bar and a set of cuff links to match. No marks on the cuff links but numbers on the back of the tie bar that look like LA90 but I haven't found anything like that. I thought perhaps it refers to the type of metal. It has the patina of sterling but? I don't know. Can anyone help out?

      Is it Dutch?
I was thinking that it might be a Delft windmill?
My other question is about the mark.
Is there something between the L and the A?
Could it be gold rather than silver?
    2. cindyjune cindyjune, 12 years ago
Good morning vetraio50. Yes, between the L and A is a dot which I could not type in. I consider the delft windmill also as Dutch also but the marks leave me confused. The L is quite worn probably because that is where pressure would be to opend the clip. I even tried turning it upside down and looking for 06V-7!
No luck. I have a pair of cufflinks that match, made out of a much lighter metal.
I will try to photo the mark again. Thanks for helping me with this mystery.

Hi, her in Oz it's 9.30 pm.
The decoration around the Delftvscreams 'Dutch' to me.
If it's silver the A would be Amsterdam.
I have some Dutch salts on Cw with the regular old marks I know.
      Check them out for aomparison.
There's a very tiny mark there too.
I find your piece intriguing and have been looking the Dutch sites.
I like your idea of inverting.
I'm still not happy about not recognizing the mark

      Check this out:
      http://reviews.ebay.com/Dutch-silver-and-silverplate-marks?ugid=10000000006798423
The suggestion is that the 90 means silver plate and not silver.
The other letters would be a Zilpla.
In your case the L is actually Z?
From memory most of the dutch silver linked to Delft is assayed in Schoonhoven. But that may be incorrect.

      Hi,
9 am here! I keep trying to make the L look like a Z but I don't think it is. I will continue to keep researching the Dutch angle. Thanks. I'll update when I can.

Hi 11 pm. Just watching a Dutch Antiques programme: Tussen Kunst en Kitsch. Earlier I found this for you about the '90' mark:

      Good luck!

Thanks PDAM, (long but lovely name!) I wish men wore awesome tie bars like this all the time!

I think I can solve this one. The tie bar is Dutch, silver plated indeed - hence ZILPLA 90, partially rubbed away - and the Delft cabochon is by 'Porceletti' of Gouda, Netherlands, ca.1955. It is hand painted in a naïve style. Due to criticism on their hand painted cabs, Porceletti moved to transfer printing and became commercially very successful with it. There is more information on Delft jewelry at Verwoerd Ceramics Online. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much VCO! You have provided me with much info to look at and solve the mystery. I also have a pair of earrings that appear to be the same style of delft painting. thanks to all

You're most welcome. If you want a free opinion on your earrings - not a valuation - you may want to send us some clear pictures. Keep well.
