Following the 1925 Paris Exposition of DECOrative ARTS, many Artists were inspired by and followed the ART DECO movement and this included Glassmakers all over the world and especially in Europe. One of the newer glasshouses was the "CRISTALLERIES DE NANCY" in France. It began operations in 1922 and closed in 1934, like many others, a casualty of the Great Depression. It was located across the street from Daum. The Director was Auguste Houillon who had been a student of Galle and had been employed at Daum previous to opening this Glasshouse. In their short existence, they created wonderful Crystal and Colored glass items with elaborate decoration, etchings and cuttings. They marked their wares with a round Acid Mark that contained the Cross of Lorraine with the words CRISTAL NANCY. I have seen many items from this Company offered in eBay and other auction sites. Their wares were sold through distributors in the USA during their days of operation so there should be nice examples of their fine work to be found in our usual haunts. The quality of their work is astonishing and should be considered as a must-have in any Art Glass collection.
I contacted a serious historical researcher of this Glasshouse in France who advised me that no catalogs exist of this company and that no one has to this date, published books or an encyclopedia of their wares.
He advised me that this vase was probably designed by Auguste Houillon because it is an early ART DECO design that was inspired by the Paris Exposition and he was the main designer in those early years. It measures 10 1/2" tall by 4" at the widest, has a ribbed body and is decorated with Cuttings of a Daisy, Foliage and lines. I have tried to show the acid-etched mark but it is a little fuzzy to start with and my camera is not the best. Enjoy and Good Hunting!! RER (LOUMANAL)
