    can someone explain to me why this type is so expensive.didn't they make littery thousands of these.Is it because the butterfly is a rare lunch hour special.a elderly lady didn't want this any more she said it was just taking up room.

      A "Reader's Digest version" of what makes that particular crock valuable is that it was made by the Red Wing Stoneware Company in Red Wing, Minnesota, and to collectors of that pottery's work, that is considered a desirable decoration. Red Wing stoneware has its own collecting base that separates it somewhat from the general world of American stoneware. Taking its Red Wing origin out of the equation, a Midwestern stoneware crock with that decoration would probably not bring quite as much--though Ohio and other Midwestern stoneware has a very strong market right now.
