[Courtesy Jeff Savage, Drexel Antiques]: Though most collectors focus on split bamboo fly rods, lately some early fiberglass rods, split bamboo casting and spinning rods, and steel casting rods have been getting attention. Bamboo rod names to look for include Granger, Young, Dickerson, Phillipson, Devine, Edwards, Thomas, Payne, Leonard, Hardy and rods made for Abercrombie and Fitch, Heddon, South Bend, and Abbey and Imbrie. In split bamboo rods, shorter is better, and condition is everything. And having a rod’s original cloth bag and rod tube will add to its value.
Antique fishing gear has become highly collectible, both for its workmanship and appearance and the nostalgic memories it evokes of a simpler time. In addition to lures, collectors seek rods, reels, decoys, and licenses, plus items by early makers such as Heddon, Creek Chub, Chapman, Shakespeare, and Pflueger.
