Picked this up recently at my local goodwill for $4. There are no identifying markings, nor was it packaged, but it appears to be silver plate, and it has been identified as a Victorian sugar scuttle. A quick polish brightened it up considerably, though I'd still like to give it a little more attention. A fun little piece, and four dollars well spent!

I believe it is for sugar. It's missing the little dredger or spoon that slots into that ring you see in pic 2. The missing piece is basically the same shape and pattern as the bowl .... it may be still at GW.

Thanks! Unfortunately I didn't find any coordinating spoons. It's pretty gross inside as well, looks like someone may have used it as a posh ashtray at some point. Definitely not putting my sugar in there, maybe I'll repurpose it as a soap dish or put my rings in it when I do dishes.

Vet and tallcakes have it right-- definitely a sugar scuttle.

Looks to be silver plate. This and most silverplate will have makers information on the bottom.

Scottvez, yes I looked all over for makers markings but didn't find any, which seems very odd. However it scratches too easily to be steel, and it cleaned right up with a little silver polish, so I think it must be silverplate. Besides it doesn't seem like the sort of thing one would buy unless it was silver plate; it strikes me more as a luxury item than a necessity.
