Beautiful but very sad Mahogany bedside table.

There are three purposely drilled holes on the top of the cabinet, hence, the sadness of the item.

My elderly mother insists the holes are for drainage, neither decoration or an act of vandalism on Dads behalf (??!!).

Regardless of the holes and why they are there...could anyone possibly put a date to this item please

OK, 2 cents here. I don't think it is a night stand and I think the peg holes were intentional. You don't show the interior (that may or may not help) but I think this was originally a bible box cabinet. I would also expect the peg holes to be where religious statues were intended to be dropped in so they wouldn't tip over. The uniform color of the top defies anything being permanently mounted there for an extended period of time. Just my 2 cents.

When I blow up pic #3 it appears there are metal pins broken off in two of the holes. Would that be correct?

Can you post a clear picture of the interior that shows at least one side wall?

      Hi fhrjr2,

Really ? A bible box cabinet..i didnt even realise such a thing existed :)

I am not sure about metal pins in the holes but yes, i think there is something in the holes ?
Yes, i can take pics of interior and close up shots of the holes but will have to be tomorrow as this item lives at the back of the shed, currently full of books!

Thank you so much for your comments :)

I think that there was an upper portion to this at one time & the hole were for alignment pins or for screws from below.
In the close up image of the top you can see marks in the finish where the upper portion sides sat.

I agree walksoftly but can't see on the finish where a top would have been mounted. Too much glare. Very well could have been alignment pins. I tend to doubt the holes were for screws because of where they are located close to the side and back wall.
