I believe it's a crate for shipping bottled beverage long distances by train for example. I found this patent detail. What does the inside look like, any evidence of these inserts? Interesting piece.

Nice, I really like these old metal crates. Any signs of paint? I have been told they were left in a metal finish although some have been painted over time in yellow. Patent info is interesting. Nice find.

Thanks guys for the input, nobucks, thanks for that patent info. The bottom of the crate is a simple open grid grate. Robeo, there is no sign of any paint.
