This 2 1-2" x 2 1-4" multi enamel brooch was designed by Lester Gaba for Coro (1901-1998) in December 1941 shortly following the Pearl Harbor invasion. It shows the American flag in center surrounded by 21 central & South American countries flags with the words Amigos Siempre (Friends Forever). Signed Coro with patent no above, on goldtone
what a beauty!
What a neat piece of history!
looks to be a rare find ...just lovely,..nice find jenni
The enameling is most beautiful here !~
Thanks lentilka for the lovely compliment it's so nice of you and really appreciated :)
Eileen you're right, it's all in the flags with this piece, and you can imagine I had a hard time finding a clean, minimally eroded version of the multi colored enamels - so I waited, comparison shopped & finally found this one. Many thanks for the fabulous kind words as always
Mary this one was the highest priced of the several I found, of course it was from - drumroll.....rl lol! As with alot of Coro enamel pieces, they take a beating over time, so finding one in good shape is challenging. I did want it to look nice enough to see the country flag images, to show people which South American countries were on board with the US at the start of WW2 - I don't know that those countries were officially our allies during the war, but America was concerned about keeping friendly relations there. Did you know Orson Welles filmed a semi-doc in Brazil during the war, and Walt Disney went down to a few countries including Argentina and Brazil to make some adorable cartoon shorts, some with Donald Duck, and a beautiful musical cartoon intro called aquarela do Brasil (you can see it on ytube), where the cartoonists paint images of Rio de Janeiro and adorable creative things like a bunch of toucan parrots turning into a banana split with chocolate sauce, all to the music of Xavier Cugat's big band song 'Brazil,' it's so cool
Great comment MrsT and I really love your grandma's Pearl Harbor brooch as well, that is very iconic also and it commands big $, an antique classic
Thank you so much for the kind compliment Roycroft, it is rare to find one of these that although a bit faded looking from its age, is overall in pretty good viewing condition
Thanks Phil for the super compliment, you know me Ms Rhinestone Lover, I rarely have an all enamel piece with no 'bling', so getting one of these in decent enamel condition was really important to me, and I totally appreciate your noticing it & the kind words
Thanks all for the thoughtful love
