This one is larger than the British trench art hat that I posted yesterday. The shell is a large (almost 5" diameter) artillery shell.
For every 20 UK hats, I might see one with US insignia.
The hat pin is from an officers screw back collar insignia. The chin strap is scrap brass.
Based on residue in the bottom, this was probably used as an ashtray as well.
