I've posted this before but never very good photos of it. Here it is as i purchased it from someone in Montana. They didn't know anything about it either. I've never been able to determine much about it. I think it was made in the early 20th c. If you look closely at the back, you can see some pencil drawings which appear to be Roosevelt with his glasses. I just realized that there is another painting on the back side which has been painted over with white paint. The simple pencil sketch is on on top of that. The board that it's painted on is very fragile and crumbly. I'm not quite sure how to stabilize it. I love this painting. It reminds me of my dad and how he looks today. It looks even more like my pepere - his father - with those bright blue eyes. I'd love to find out more about this painting. i have it tacked onto the back of a very nice gold frame. I'll make another post showing it 'framed' on the wall.

Beautifully painted. I love the eyes also.
I wonder if the man had a problem such as a severe cataract on his left eye since it is painted n a hazy blue, unlike the brighter blue of his right eye.

It needs to be cleaned to be at its best, but that would be expensive to do. I have some fragile oils on board. I matted and framed them under glass. I used some spacers around the edge of the frame so that the mat would not lie directly on the boards. That put the only contact around the edges on the front. I covered the entire backs of the boards with acid free foam board for support. I ordered custom frames on framesbymail.com, including the mats and backing.

thank you kwqd. that sounds like a good plan. i love how it looks in this one, but it is quite a bit too big for the frame. This one frames it just as i like it.

on another site, someone mentioned that he looks like a 'poilu'. i checked it out and he really does! Poilu are French infantry troops - particularly from WWI. The shirt collar and that fat moustache are really indicative of a poilu.

the almost 'club collar' he is sporting was very popular from 1910-1915/16. That would make it fit with WWI as well.
