United Clock, Brooklyn NY. Brass plated case in the image of a pocket watch. Model 370 from the early 50's I think it came with a chain. I'll have to add one with a fob. Maybe AR 8 has a suggestion for a fob for a watch this large.How about it Kevin? Bought at garage/estate sale for $4 it keeps acurate time. Can you get an electric clock to last 60 yrs today? I'm sure you could find a high quality atomic synchronized electric clock that will certainly last beyond our lifetimes, but your point is well taken. We live in a throw-away world. It's cheaper to make a new one than to fix an old one. That became true even in the early 20th century. A lot of our prized antique clocks were stored away, or disposed of when they stopped working and their owners decided to go out to buy cheaper, newer, more accurate models.
Vintage electric clocks can be relatively hard to find because the electric motors had enough torque to run the movements long past time for servicing...basically into the ground. The motors also generated heat which tended to dry out the movement's oil.
Today's quartz movements, especially watches, don't have that kind of torque. If the movement gets foreign matter into it, it will stop...period.
Then you either get it cleaned and serviced, (the clock maker might just replace the movement) or you throw it away and go buy a new one.
