The first photo is not attributed so I cannot say who took it. The back has a hand written note John K Pollock in Civil War uniform. No date.

The next photo is awesome. In addition to my grand father being a photographer so was his Dad and Uncle! Printed on the back of the card stock is "H. Butler, Photographic Artist, Vermillion, D.T." (That's Dakota Territory!) In pencil is written "Ed and I".

Great-grand father, George Butler ready for war.

I believe the last picture is a young George Butler. Penciled on the back my grandfather wrote, "the old man himself"

I know the Civil War collectors go nuts for identified photos -- I am sure they will be salivating over these gems. Your Grandfather's photos make for an amazing historical collection.

Savoychina, Your first photo is Capt. John K Pollock who was born in New Hampshire in 1829. On June 9, 1862 he was commissioned an Union officer in Company "C" Illinois 96th Infantry Regiment. He was discharged as a Capt. on June 10, 1865 at Nashville, TN. He died June 25, 1901 in Illinois.

1st photo is a Civil War era CDV.

2nd photo appears to be from soon after the war.

3rd photo also looks to be post war but considerably later (1880s or later). If provide its overall size and specifics on the mount (color and size) along with any other information, I can probably date it to a decade.

The last photo is from about 1910- 1920s.
