Here's a locket I picked up at the flea market. He has a very nicely engraved P on the front. On the reverse it says From Father 1919.
Was manufactured by W & H company. I can't seem to locate this particular mark though. It has a one quarter gold shell.

OK you watch & gold experts, What does "gold shell" mean? Gold pushers have all sorts of tricky names, but this one I'm not familiar with.

Could be Wightman & Hough Co.

      BB2 does Gold Shell mean?
Sometimes Gold Filled is referred to as Gold Shell. This is because the sheet of gold is a "shell" or outer casing to the base metal. Some pieces may be stamped 1/10 meaning they are Gold Filled or Gold Shell - they are High Grade Gold Filled with double the weight and thickness of gold used in the construction when compared to standard Gold Filled stamped 1/20.

Thanks PW. Whenever I run into a tricky sounding name for something, I back away. Back in the 70's & 80's dealing in pure gold, I noticed a phenomenon that surprised me. It takes a good eye, but you can see a very slight diff. in colour of 99.9% from diff. parts of the world. Hard to explain, but Oriental has a greenish hue, S.Amer. a reddish hue & S. Afrikan & N. Amer. just a gold. Doubt that you believe this, but it's true.

Jono, I never dealt in jewelery gold so it does matter if I am purchasing. Purchasers should be aware of what they are buying.

Blunderbuss. My last post was my best New Jersey Gangster impression lol.
I know what you mean. I have a gold bracelet in front of me now that is stamped 925 Italy.

Jono, remember that I live in the Antilles & a lot of gold & gem stones are sold here to tourist. I know these people. I know a jewelery maker who will stamp 18k for 12-14k without much incentive. I live with them, know them & know their moves. Most are honest but what recourse does a tourist have after they leave? Even with that, I only buy gold thru one who is a long trusted friend. Being honest, I even stay there while he does my order & watch every step. I don't want to see "shiny" gold basically. I now just centralize on emeralds & the lope comes out. (no beach washed broken Heineken bottle pieces). Just the old,"buyer beware". A side note: with all the really cheap electronics here? We "locals" buy from the States or else where & pay the shipping. Advice to tourist is to buy the demonstrator & not the "new in the box". Often they will not want to sell the demonstrator but you know it works, right? Warranties for things bought outside the States are invalid. There's "Being a Tourist 101". Learn from others mistakes instead of your own.

      I love the locket!
However, the 'tourist beware' comments scare me a bit...

Interesting, I just received a very similar locket that belonged to my great grand mother. The company was in business from 1856 to 1922, in Rhode Island. Mine has the same hallmark and also 10K but no mention about the shell. While researching it, it was stated that jewelers refer to it as 9K gold because the center is filled and the shell is gold and the actual gold content amounts to 9K. I was rather pleased the company was so easy to research.
