In 1934 Jacob Bang, Director of Holmegaard Glassworks and brother of the ceramist Arne Bang, designed a series of heavy 'art glass' bowls and vases in this bold art deco design. It's very different from the fine Viol and Primula series he designed just a few years earlier and, unlike Viol and Primula, decidedly modern to look at even today, I think!

I absolutely love both the bowl and the vase (which I often use). There are different shapes of vases and bowls in this series, in these colours along with 'smoke-coloured' glass (brown) and colourless glass, but I have never come across any at flea markets or antiques fairs. I inherited both the bowl and the vase.

The dimensions of the bowl are diameter: 20 cm; height: 10 cm. Despite its moderate size, this bowl is quite heavy (1.56 kilos!). The colour is often described as 'nephrite green'. The height of the vase is 16 cm.

I have just been going through the Hardernet site (http://www.hardernet.dk) and found this reference to these pieces by Jacob E. Bang: "KUNSTGLAS SERIE "PÅLAGTE BÅND I MARINOT'S MANÉR" - Jacob E. Bang, Holmegaard Glasværk 1932"

The suggestion is that Bang was emulating the designs of Maurice Marinot. The bullicante perfume bottles (and stopper) from this group certainly are a tribute to Marinot's designs. These two trailed pieces of yours are just fabulous.

Amazing, amazing pieces!!! I wish I had them -well, simmilar ones ;)

Jacob Bang was trained as an architect, wasn't he? In that case is natural he would search for inspiration in the work of master glass designers

He was an architect, yes, and also worked as an architect, but he is actually much better known as a glass artist - he was employed at Holmegaard 1928-1941, much of the time as their artistic director (he also started stoneware production there with his brother Arne Bang). A very prolific man indeed!

I love the fact both Bang and Lütken were not actual designers but an architect and a painter, and they ended up being the best ones in this field.
