Used a coat of Golden Oak Stain mixed with Tung Oil, then about 3 coats of brushed satin urethane. I did the mink oil on the leather edges and handles are original - bit rustic but wood is nice and smooth - sits exactly 21 inches from bottom so sitting on a couch is a perfect height. I really like the finished product. The leather is spotty in some parts, but that adds to vintage charm - after all it is over 100 years old. Neat brass tag on front that reads Fred'K Loeser & Co., Trunk Department, Brooklyn, NY.

Hello, nice job on your trunk. A word about trunk names. I know this may be nit picking, but if we as trunk lovers dont carry on the future is bleak for trunks. "Low Profile" is not an actual trunk term. Your trunk is a Steamer, or Cabin trunk. Both of these names are acceptable as trunk makers used them interchangeably. Steamer/Cabin trunks were limited to be no higher than 14". This was a regulation all steamship companies had. The length and width had a max, but it was fairly large and changed over the years. The height requirement stayed the same well into the 1900s. (I have documents of this if anyone would like them) Many people use the name Steamer trunk incorrectly on everything from a sample trunk to a wardrobe trunk. Remember, all steamer trunks are travel trunks, but not all travel trunks are steamer trunks.
Fred'K Loeser & Co was a department store in New York/Brooklyn that sold trunks as well.

Thank you Jim, I do appreciate all your knowledge. Where did I get low profile from I wonder? Will rename this guy correctly as a Cabin Trunk. When did you start collecting? I love seeing your trunks on your site. We did an exchange a few years back, an old Jenny Lind for a nice small blue pressed tin one that you refinished - it is one of my favorites in my collection and sits proudly in our living room. Many have asked if I would sell it - no way!! Thanks again for the info.
