Found this beautiful lady at GW this morning. A Queen Louise Portrait Plate. The border is forest green with gilt filigree accents. The portrait in the center is a transfer reverse image of Queen Louise of Prussia after a portrait by Carl Gustav Ludwig Richter. The back of the plate carries a gold "Empire China" mark and the numbers 949. It's 9 3/4 inches in diameter. There's a small quarter inch chip to the back side and a tiny nick in the portrait but still pretty nice. This same version of the portrait appears on quite a few pieces from the late 19th century. Some are from other porcelain factories in France, Germany, and Hungary. I'm not quite sure about the exact country for this one, but I'm thinking Austria or Bavaria. There isn't much online about Empire China. Several auction sites say this mark dates from 1850-1890. -Mike-

    Queen Louise of Prussia 1885

Louisa Augusta Wilhelmina Amelia (March 10, 1776 – July 19, 1810), Queen of Prussia
The deep admiration expressed by the artist for the Queen of Prussia did not solely derive from her noble features. Queen Louisa Augusta Wilhelma Amelia von Mecklemburg Strelitz was a passionate opponent of the French Revolution and a declared enemy of Napolean. Queen Louisa openly encouraged her husband King Friedrich Wilhelm III to go to war and favoured the Russian alliance. Napolean called her "My Beautiful Enemy". A loyal admirer of the martyred Queen Marie Antoinette. '

this image of Queen Louise brought to mind the only brush w/ royalty i've ever had, and come to find out, the woman i know is a direct descendent of Queen Louise. I first met her at Dana Hall in Boston where she lived w/ a close friend of mine. Then i met her again by coincidence while working in the Mosquitia of Honduras where she trained me in my work there. only later did i find out that she was a Countess in the Finck von Finckenstein family. She was [is?] an amazing and fearless woman! While working way out in the jungle, i didn't hear anything else from her after my training until we had a terrible hurricane and she showed up in a helicopter owned by the German Embassy - bringing us badly needed supplies. Thank you for triggering this memory of my one and only brush w/ royalty!

Thanks Aim, I almost didn't buy it because I thought it looked newer than it really is, but the marks says otherwise. Glad I didn't put it back !

I saw this piece and instantly thought of your post.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/191092562827
      It started out at $0.99
We need to educate the ebay world on how to play the game and keep prices LOW. LoL

I didn't LoL I don't like hiking up the price, I'm a last few seconds kinda bidder ;)

You'll have to post them Sean. I'd love to see them :)

I know I do the same thing Aim... I used to use "phantom bidder" if I really want something. It can toss a bid out faster than you can type. You can set it automatically to within seconds of closing and you don't have to stay up all night to get that special piece. It's not against Ebay policy either. You have to buy their credits though so it's not free.

      Hi Mike-
Do you have any additional information on how much these plates are worth? I have a Empire China plate 739- exact same stamp- with what looks like a Romeo and Juliet/dark indigo border design. Thanks!

Mike, I recently came across a plate stamped with same Empire China. Not sure who is painted on the plate. It's numbered 367. Trying to determine if it has any value before I sell it. Thanks
