Today two more of the Ripon postcards collected by Mr & Mrs Septimus Miller in 1906. Research on these cards has led me astray. I have spent the last day or so looking through details about St Wilfrid who is said to have begun the first of the Ripon churches at this site. What the Millers saw in 1906 and what we see today is the product of four building periods that began in AD 672.

These two views are from the same publisher and are views from the North and from the South-East. The South-East view has a wall between the graves and the Minster that no longer exists, I believe.

Interestingly the South East view was also drawn by Joseph Mallord William Turner in a sketch entitled "Ripon Cathedral from the South-East: Canal to Left, River Skell to Right 1797". It is in the Tate and is an image from the 'From North of England Sketchbook' that was part of the Turner Bequest XXXIV. The Tate also has a view from this angle : After Thomas Girtin "The Rivers of England ('River Scenery'): Ripon Minster on the Rivers Ure and Skell", engraved by T. Lupton 1825.

The Millers were art collectors and I am beginning to get a feel for their Victorian sensibilities.

I'd love to know who published these images.
