    it looks like a rug-beater of sorts, but doesn't seem strong enough for that. i've seen them many times, but don't know what they are. this one is definitely pretty old.

      As Valentino pointed out, it is a Rug Beater, used to beat the dust and dirt out of rugs as they hung on the clothes line. Cheers, Kirk

      I love the braided/woven design of these, I've seen metal ones, but these just are so much more appealing.

      thanks Artistinside and walksoftly! i like the braided wicker too. it sure doesn't feel sturdy enough to do much slapping/wacking/klopping!
