This has been in our family for many years, originally given to my husband by an elderly gentleman, about 40 years ago.
    Dark, very solid wood,
I think someone told me it was a sewing table but I'm not sure that would fit this design? We have trawled through lots of websites and dealers, but can't find anything even vaguely similar. we are just interested to know what it is?
    Many thanks in advance.

I'm not a furniture expert, and without more pictures, it looks like it was Jimmy-Rigged. It kind of looks like a table attached to a commode. This might be a piece of "Franken-Furniture". Maybe it is a dual purpose bedside commode and bedside table. For positive confirmation, you'll have to wait for an expert to happen by.

The design is called a "demi-lune console table," which the company who made it put their own design on the piece which was commonly done. Franken or rigged are not terms associated with factory made pieces, so should never be used on this piece.
The little cupboard actually makes it a more useful table, nice to see its been in your family for years. No other pictures are really needed here.
