This is a tintype picture of a confederate solider. With a loop you are able to see the buttons on the jacket, I am not 100% sure but they look to be Alabama Volunteer Corp. This is a well focus individual. If any one can tell me the type of jacket he is wearing that would be a big help. Thanks

Jacket looks to be a 4 button sack coat.

The pocket on the outside top is not typical of a union coat, so it may indeed be a CS product.

Do you have a way to post enlarged images of the buttons?

No. I tried, but no luck.

Do you actually see the "AVC" initials on them or do you just see an eagle?

Just the eagle. Here is another pic of the buttons, this is the best I can do. Wish I could zoom in even closer.

I cannot see enough details to discount it being a Federal Eagle button.

I have seen some Union private purchase sack coats with an outside pocket.

FOR ME, the jury is out on this one-- as far as US/CS attribution.

The CS jacket in your last photo is entirely different:
      - slanted pocket
      - 6 buttons
      - shoulder tabs
      - double stitch on front (each side of buttons)

Is that jacket yours as well?

No the jacket was merely for reference purpose only. Should have mention that sorry. They is definitely some type of bird on the buttons i.e. eagle/pelican??

Do a search online of "4 button sack coat civil war"-- you will find many UNION sack coats with a much closer resemblance to your coat than the referenced coat.

The "devil is in the details"!

Here is an another picture taken out of the frame, with a better close up.

I blew up your last photo and the top button shows enough details to discern that it is a federal eagle button. What stands out are the legs that are spread out clutching the branches (esp. the one on the right side as viewed).

Here is what they look like:

An AVC button has a different style eagle with the legs together:

The visible Union Eagle button does not makes this a definite Union jacket (I have seen many CS uniforms with US buttons), but that along with the four buttons does have me leaning in that direction.

Scott thanks. Some AVC button's are also similar to federal eagle buttons. I tend to agree that this is a jacket with Federal Eagle buttons.
