I bought this GEISHA GIRL, 10" Plate, at an estate sale over 30 years ago.. Because I loved the Colors, of Cobalt Blue. It has a mark on the back that to me looks like a Kutani piece. I might need to get a close up picture of the Mark.. Any confirmation on it being kutani, or when it might have been made appreciated..
Definitely Ku Tani, reading down, Nine Valleys. Kutani is an area in Japan which is host to several hundred kilns. This mark might be considered generic, that is, not identifiable to a specific kiln because it has no additional kanji. However, the red and gold mark may be distinctive to a particular kiln. It has no required (since 1891) export markings, so it could be very early or made for domestic use. I think the date on the label may be conservative. Someone who recognizes the decoration may add more.
Thank you so much, Wexval. After much search over the years, I had concluded from the mark that it had to be dated somewhere around 1900.. I am the one who marked it, in case, My Family ended up with it..I have loved this from the day I bought it..
I appreciate your confirming my findings, wanted to be sure of what it was. Thought the blue gave it extra value to me..
