I recently received this massive peice of history as a gift. It is a wonderful banner and am trying to figure out a bit more about it. It's about 4 feet across and possibly 30 pounds including the frame. The eye of the eagle seems to be a marble which I found VERY interesting! The ship looks as if it could be the USS Colorado, as I have seem almost identical pieces that have that ship's name embroidered above the image of the ship. It's in great condition and doesn't look to be as faded as other banners from 1907. I am curious if anyone has any more information about this peice.

Thank you so much in advance! :)

I love these Asian embroidery pieces-- they were popular at the end of the 19th century and still made well into the 20th century. I think the latest ship one that I have seen was the late 1930s.

By the mid century wearable tour jackets were much more popular and these large framed pieces died out.

It is a shame about the fading. The original blue or black is usually very dark when they don't have sun damage.

Here is one of mine posted on here:

If I remember correctly on mine, I don't think they were trapunto embroidery.

Of course this is well before WWI. I believe this would be the world tour of the "Great White Fleet" to show off America's navy. Nice historical piece.
