    This tool has a thumb screw clamp for 1/4 inch material and has levels for horizontal and vertical with a angle gauge from -10 t0 + 20 degrees.
    Might have been used for prop angle adjustment. The German word trommelteilung 5' is on the side. it is about 6" x 3".

      It looks vaguely like a leveling device for a mortar.

      That crossed my mind also and I thought when looking at mortar pictures that they had those things built in??

      No. I was trained as an indirect-fire (81mm mortar) crewman and fire control specialist. The sighting and leveling device are removable for transport. It's a precision device and the only "delicate" thing about a mortar. :-)
