Your little stick pin is called a vinaigrette.

Vinaigrette are usually small boxes with a hinged lid, which opens to reveal a pierced grill, also hinged, and underneath the grill would be a small sponge. soaked in an oily sweet smelling substance. Used both by men and women were generally carried whilst travelling, to give a pleasent aroma as the streets.
