OK, this photo is a mess condition wise, but also has some
interesting content that made me purchase it some years ago
from a CW show friend.
It was found, with no case, laying at the bottom of an
old box of junk in eastern Virginia. The finder placed it
in an old cheap leather covered photo case to preserve it
from further damage. The good content? This young officer
has a Virginia state seal buckle on, which is more visible on
the ambro than here online. Also see the
"gabled house" in back of the image to the right? This is on
the canvas backdrop. These are seen on many CS military images,
which usually show N.C. soldiers. This one is a Virginian, and
the photo studio was believed to have been near Petersburg
in Virginia in 1862. He is also holding a knife, but it is hard
to see. I believe he was a lieutenant. Not your average Civil War image!
The gabled house is one of the few CS backdrops that have been identified.
I thought that the identified images were exclusively NC troops-- great to see a guy with a VA buckle.

Thankfully he got a "new home" in the case you provided. The fact you saved the photo must give you a good feeling when you look at it--It may have ended up in nowhereland. Now we can all enjoy it, and your commentary! Thanks! Lois
Thanks, Scott. Yes, I read that they discovered that the gabled house backdrop was found to have been near Petersburg, Va. in an area which at one time was
the camping ground of North Carolina troops. The backdrop was only used
for a few months, in 1862, if I remember right. John
PCC, Thanks! I was not the one who discovered this image laying loose,
and saved it, but my old Civil War Show friend deserves the credit.
I am using the same old beat up photo case that he used. John
