    it's interesting that it has the exact same dimensions and construction as my 18th century Umanome plates [horse eye]. Fairly thick and very sturdy - like made for tavern use. in the late 19th / early 20th century collectors began to really admire tavern pottery in the old japanese taverns and they began to collect it. this may have been Awaji's response to that emerging market.

      thanks inky and Caper. this is NOT Awaji. it does get confused as Awaji by a lot of folks though.
