I thought, after seeing ho2cultcha(Pete)'s post of his Rooster Plate, that I would show a selection of the A & P Grocery Stores line of "Premium" dishes that Metlox Pottery of California produced for their stores. These dishes were not part of the Metlox regular lines, but similar to several Rooster Lines that the Pottery produced in the 1940's-50's, that were very popular. They were offered as a premium to customers of A&P grocery stores in California, and because of that, the pattern is often called the "Premium Rooster", and now known as "Skinny Rooster", because it's a slimmer version of the other Metlox Rooster lines of dishes.
I found these mostly on Ebay, or Pinterest, as I did the information, that also was on Replacements.com.
The first picture is of a platter, plates, and a serving bowl, the second picture is of the Metlox back stamp found on the platter, the third picture is of a condiment dish, and creamer and sugar, and the forth picture is of the rooster! :^D

As far as I can find out so far, that mark has not been identified and if it can be tied directly to Metlox, we have some new information. The rooster design was clearly used by the Orchard Ware products as well and their marks also incorporate a similar font "Made in California" phrase. I don't doubt that Metlox made this line (probably the Premium Rooster line) but I still wonder if they were the only one to provide these A&P premiums.
I believe that too Harry, because if a company uses a Jobber company, to make a product, and they are unable to complete, or maybe just contracted to make certain pieces, by the original order company(A&P), or as a subcontractor of the Jobber company(Metlox or Orchard Ware). There may have been other companies involved too(the condiment dish), because this Rooster design was so popular, the companies, had to keep up with their own product lines.

That basket weave double dish with the white Rooster in photo above is from Metlox's Cock-A-Doodle-Do Artware line.

I have that piece and a couple more from that line. I also have a few of the "Skinny Rooster" pieces, but hadn't been able to find out anything about the pattern. It was very interesting to hear the were a grocery store premium item ... I am a Metlox collector :)
