I know knowrhing about this bracelet except my mother received it from a pen pal 55 or 60 years ago from a young girl in either Japan or Thailand. Mother sent her friends small package as well with American items. That’s truly the only info I ha e, and Mother isn’t jere for me to ask. However, I do remember her once showing is a picture of her friend. Beautiful. I have always thought the story was so sweet.

I too had pen pals, more recently than your mom, it was a great form of communication pre-internet for young people, which is why I completely understand the popularity of social media. Your mother probably learned a lot about her friend's country and lifestyle, and vice versa, an enjoyable hobby
It looks Japanese to me, and may be marked somewhere on the back with a character or 950 (the silver measure).
Are the tiles plastic or bone do you know?
