This is a very plain Kris - which is a spiritual sign of power and faith amongst people in parts of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Phillipines. i've seen some really fancy ones - all which were purportedly made from the iron from meteorites. but this is a very humble and rusty one. should i clean and polish it? at least get the rust off it? what do you think?

I have had good luck with nitro solvent like you would clean the bore of a gun with and also CLR. Other rusted items I have sprayed down with WD-40 then soaked a rag with WD and wrapped the item tightly and let it sit in a well ventilated area for 4 or 5 days. Doesn't cause scratches and does a good job of rust removal. After that you can make a plan for whether or not more should be attempted in the cleaning process.

MyCountry Thanks for sharing your method. I never heard of Zudd but always willing to give something a try. I have a project I will try it on.

I finally located Zud it only has one d. ZUD. I Like how fast MyCountry says it works. It isn't expensive at all based on Walmart, Amazon etc. I am going to compare the ingredients with Bar Keepers Friend because they are both suggested for the same projects and I already have the Bar Keepers Friend.

both have oxyalic acid as the active ingredient.

MyCountry I am waiting for the Zud to be delivered. I am pretty much housebound nowdays so I order stuff. I plan to use both on the same project. It is a cast table saw top that is rusted. I plan to use one product on one side and the other on the other side. I thought it would be fun to compare them on the same project, side by side. If I live long enough I will take before, during and after pictures and post them so everyone can see and be the judge.
