I've developed an interest in these cases recently, but I don't know much about them. Anyone know what they are called, about what time period they were popular?

These look like the 1950s figurines made as revival of earlier styles. It is hard to tell from here,but they may have been made in Japan; lots came from there, and they were nicely made and painted. There was a continual output of these from Europe also through the 20thC and earlier , but the big boom was 50s, Japan.
I admit to having an affection for them too :)
