Other than they're bird figurines I know nothing about them.
    Ceramic maybe?
Curious as to why or the purpose of the small hole on the back underside of each.
Unfortunately, it looks like the beak on the larger of the two was chipped off.
The small bird - approx 2" long standing 1" high.
The larger bird - approx 2" long standing 2" high.

Those are cloisonne (enamel on brass) birds from China. The hole, I believe, is a result of the production process. I've seen these kinds of items listed in the 1930s-1970s age range, but I can't verify, don't know if that's the full range, and I don't know if there's cues what specific decade a bird is from.

Beautiful birds and I love how you positioned them, they seem to be communicating!

The holes are to make them more realistic. LOL !

When a hollow object is fired in a kiln, there must be opening somewhere as a vent for heat/steam.
Also, the opening would give a spot for a dowel to be inserted as a handle so the object could be decorated without the artist handling the object so much.
