Sold to us as 1930s diamond, ruby and semi-precious stones. Has anyone seen anything like it before?

Jenni has it right as the style of the little birds does have that “marcasite” look. But turn it over...
I believe this brooch is much older than 1930’s. It’s hard to tell how the “trombone hinge” is connected to the brooch. If the two tubes are directly connected, it was made before 1900, (1850-1870) if the two tubes are soldered on a “pad” and that is connected to the brooch, then it was made slightly later.( there were exceptions, but very few) These hinges were handmade most likely by the maker of the brooch. Plus having a “C” clasp, makes it more credible to being made before 1900. By the 1930’s, a “new, machine made” round hinge took the place of the trombone.
This is an amazing antique brooch, You should post it in “Fine Jewelry”. There are many there that know antique jewelry much better than I, and hopefully get more answers.

It is of course fine jewellery, not costume, and right in for being "Victorian novelty"!
