It's the first painting I've ever bought. I saw it in a secondhand store, and it just... spoke to me.

Many thanks to Newfld for identifying the subject.

I love the colours and the textures! I'm not sure whether I love the jagged terrain or the bold light source the most.

It appears to be oil on masonite. The raised parts are made of polystyrene foam, and they've been picked at, but I'm looking forward to attempting a restoration. The most damage is on one horse's leg, and the whip.

The signature looks like it says JN... maybe? But it's not dated (I'm guessing the late 1970s / early 1980s?). Most likely Australian, as it's quite big and difficult to transport, so I imagine it was painted locally.

I hope you will enjoy looking at it as much as I do. ^_^

Beautiful painting and I agree with the mythology angle - Helios was god of the sun who would drive his horse drawn chariot across the skies to bring daylight, and there does appear to be the sun behind him in the picture. Wonderful find!

Hi Newfld! Thanks so much for the information, I really appreciate it. It makes the painting even more exciting! I thought four horses was a bit too much for a normal a guy, but just doing an image search for Helios, he always seems to have four horses. Thanks again! I'd better change the title. ^_^
