This is the biggest and heaviest mortise chisel I have ever seen. It is 14 inches long and the blade is an inch square. I presume for framing timber buildings, barns, etc. It was found in a scrap yard.

I believe that is referred to as a "Pig Sticker " style Mortise Chisel. Possibly an England maker. Also reffered to as a Joiner's Mortising Chisel. Nice find, that is a beast!!!

I forgot to ask, is 14" the overall length? If the blade is in the 7-1/4" t0 10" range, it could be classified as a Millwright's Chisel.

Thanks to all for looking in and thanks for the info lptools.. The blade is 8 inches long plus a half inch collar. You were right about the makers which I forgot to mention - Brades & Co. of England.
