My daughter and I are wondering if anyone knows what this is. Our guesses were a drinking gourd or some type of instrument.

I think it’s a “musical” instrument. Rubbing the ridges with a stick will make a sound.

It is called a guiro,a percussion instrument used in Latin American music.
