SONY TC - 102A Tapecorder & Reels
Straight From The Basement shelf we have a Sony tapecorder. NO, that's not a misspelling that's how it's actually spelled.
The Sony 102 was introduced in 1961. This particular model is a 102a which was introduced a little later.
I have the original microphone with an additional Aiwa microphone, a Vista dynamic microphone and several new and used reel to reels.

Sony began just afterWorld War II. In 1946. Masaru Ibuka started an electronics shop in Shirokiya, a department store building in the Nihonbashi area of Tokyo with 8 total employees.
The name "Sony" was chosen for the brand as a mix of two words: one was the Latin word "sonus", which is the root of sonic and sound, and the other was "sonny", a common slang term used in 1950s America to call a young boy. In 1950s Japan, "sonny boys" was a loan word in Japanese, which connoted smart and presentable young men, which Sony founders Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka considered themselves to be.

My reel to reel deck is also a SONY, though no doubt considerably newer than yours being a 70's-80's stereo model. I enjoyed the research info too Dave -- I always knew there was some kinda reason why I've always preferred SONY equipment in any of my own stereo components pile... ;-) :-) :-)
My Sony ES receiver finally bit it. Have to send it somewhere. Using a newer Denon 7.2 as a back up..they've been around since 1910 in Japan, but night and day difference.
My Sony has a built in power supply, weighs probably 35+ lbs.
