Japanese tea bowls - very rustic. there is a circular mark on both - faintly on their bases. any info appreciated. i love finding old japanese rustic pieces!!

Appear to be in the tradition of wabi sabi mingei pottery. Beautiful pieces.

I think these may be Shigaraki bowls, as that is a type of unglazed bowl that often features a somewhat rough texture, often with little flecks of stony material.

And the foot or base (kodai in Japanese) is a kinjumonji kodai or "cross cut foot". You don't see that style too often.
I can't make out the mark, and in any case there are huge numbers of potters out there. If you have any info on provenance, that would certainly help. Higher-quality chawan or tea bowls are sold in paulownia boxes that are inscribed with the potter's name, and furthermore there's usually some paperwork (plus a yellow cloth marked with a stamp that is used to wrap the bowl) that includes the name. But these are often missing by the time the item itself turns up in the west, as most resellers don't understand how provenance, solid proof of maker/origin, is valued in Japan.
In any case, these are very nice bowls indeed, and they look like they'd be a great pleasure to drink from!
