i thought the design was metal like silver and bronze inlaid, but now i'm not so sure. i wanted to hit it w/ some brasso or silver polish, but i don't want to mess up the old laquer. Any info appreciated!

It has a very interesting design. I’m sure in-hand and with a loupe you could make out more detail. The more I look at the pics the more interesting it becomes. :-). Good luck with your research.
