When I first tried to read the serial number in the little bronze-colored cartouche, I thought it might start with J0 (as in zero), but a look at the single alpha character J serial number table disabused me of that notion.

First of all, there are no single alpha character J serial numbers that start with a leading zero, and secondly, all of those are Kilbowie machines.

Then I noticed that your machine was modern enough to have a little plate with the model number on it: 15J. D'oh!

So it's a St. John's factory sewing machine head, and therefore the serial number prefix must be "JD." I can't read the one digit behind the spool pin, but it doesn't really matter, because detailed serial number records for St. Johns aren't available, and all one can get is a range:

So 1954 - 1961 is about as good as it gets.

I used to wonder why the records from the St. John's factory were so poor until I read this sad story:

Anyway, I spy a tension disc assembly protruding from the faceplate, so it must be some flavor of a model 15. Further, I see that the stitch length lever is surrounded by a circular plate, and the balance wheel is solid so it's probably either a 15-90 or 15-91.

I see a bit of the motor protruding from behind the pillar, so I suspect it's a 15-90, because the 15-91 has the more compact, potted motor. (See chart of model 15 submodel characteristics):

However, I don't see a belt. Perhaps it's missing?

Your machine is probably has a notch in the rear access hole on the casting to permit the wiring of your Singerlight (I do see just a hint of the chromed rear access panel peeking out from behind the horizontal arm), so it's probably this one:
