This large 8 1/2" X 6" mounted image shows a US Navy sailor with his bugle.

His hat band shows "NING SQUADRON" for Training Squadron.

Interestingly, the photographers backdrop doesn't show a naval scene-- it depicts a rural scene. Perhaps this sailor had the photograph made while home on leave.

The photographer is not identified. The sailor is identified on the back of the photograph.

Reproduction of this image is not authorized.

Notice he is wearing the ex-Apprentice program mark (figure eight knot) on his blouse/jumper.

I am not familiar at all with Navy insignia-- thanks for pointing it out.

What exactly does the apprentice program mark signify? Was it used for every field or specific jobs?

      Thanks again,

      Scott

      Scott,
Here's my write-up on the ex-Apprentice distinguishing mark for USN.

I would expect that the 'NING' is not 'The' Squadron but the end of another word, perhaps TRAI..ning ?

Correct pop-- as I said in the description: "His hat band shows "NING SQUADRON" for Training Squadron."

      Thanks for looking.

Scott, You said this sailor is identified on the back; this looks much like my grandfather Frank Grucza who was a buglar around this time. Could you let me know if this is the name? Thanks, Tim

I'll check on it. What years was he in the Navy.

It may until the end of the week to get back to you.

Can you tell if the mark on his left forehead is a Birthmark or a flaw in the Photo?
    13. scottvez scottvez, 10 years ago
Thanks for looking musik-- the image has some dirt and staining to it.

Scott, I know he lied about his age and was a bugler in 1914; I do not believe he was in the service before that. He served aboard the USS Wolverine (ex: Michigan) before WWI. Thanks for looking. Tim

I'll double check, but it is doubtful.

This image is right around the turn of the century-- 1895- 1905 time period.

I appreciate you checking. I wouldn't have you bother, but it looks so much like him. Thanks, Tim

Did you ever check the back to get the name of this sailor? Thanks, Tim
    19. scottvez scottvez, 9 years ago
      I haven't checked.

If I run across it, I will check (I have thousands of images). It is an earlier image than 1914, so I doubt it will check out.
