      Your friend had a Singer model 20, also known as the SewHandy.

      It wasn't one of the real early ones (1910-1922), because it looks like it had seven or eight spokes in the hand wheel, and the spokes are painted, but neither was it one of the late ones (1950s - 1970s), because it still had the elliptical base.
