Germany 1917 Church Bells For The War Effort Medal
By 1917 the Germans felt the shortages of the allied blockade on all levels of their economy. There was such a severe metals shortage in the munitions industry that there was a nation wide effort to scrap church bells for their metal content. To aid this effort a contribution medal was issued that was made of black-end iron. The medal is scarce as I am sure many patriotic Germans also donated their medals to the war effort's metal roundups. The medal is over 49 mm in diameter, has a plain edge and is made of black-end cast iron. The obverse has an ornamented bell with the date 1917 and a legend that translates “Bells Clang and Cannons Thunder.” The reverse inscription translates “Sacrifice of the Bells” and is signed “Ball Berlin”.

      Militarist, Wow.

Kind of a sad and strange variation on "Swords into plowshares."

Thanks, yes things do get kind of sad in war times. To me the saddest thing is when zoo animals are slaughtered for meat like in Paris in 1871.

      Wow. :-(

Then again, most domestic animals are sitting ducks for slaughter and consumption. I probably should stop clutching my pearls, because I eat meat.

I am glad I won’t be here when they start eating Each other
