Is there anything significant about this 1957 half dollar with edge rounded/flattened? Why is the edge that way? The 1950 half dollar in the images was included for comparison.

Hi, CollectiblesUnlimited. :-)
I am definitely not an expert, but it looks to me like your 1957 fifty cent coin has been "spooned":

@keramikos That is it. I imagine that it took someone quite some time to spoon this coin. Thank you.
I read a bit about spooned coins and dryer coins and this seems different. It looks more like it has been in a set of grooved rollers that have slowly been closed up to give such a regular shape. the grooves on the outside are a clue, I don't think they are the original marks as they are very fine and go completely to the outside edge, they will be what grips the coin as it is tuened by the roller set, which probaly looks similar to the grooving tool used in a lathe.
That's my 50c worth! :)
and after futher thought that a lathe was used to do it.

Very interesting.
Those 1957 half dollar coins approach sterling (90% silver)!:

The mint mark is pretty worn, but I suspect it's a "D."
